The fox was quick, jumping out of its hiding spot and getting a rabbit by its ear. It didn’t even take a second for the reset of the rabbits to panic, darting in various directions. Ares was lucky as he darted out from the bush in time with Vestar’s lunge. Unfortunately for the small creature, it practically ran into his jaws with too little time to change direction again. The first time his jaws snapped, they simply passed through air. Covering the little distance between him and the screaming animal Ares lunged, his teeth wrapped around its neck. Life faded from the rabbit quickly after his canines broke through bone. For a moment the rabbit’s body wriggled but it lay limp in his maw soon enough. Dropping his kill on a flattened patch of grass, he ran off again intent on chasing another down. Though he himself wasn’t terribly hungry, the possibility of catching another would never be a bad thing. As he twisted and turned after the rabbit he’d focused on, he wondered briefly just how big the warren was that they’d stumbled upon. Left and right he was jerked, before one sharp turn had him tumbling in a quick roll. His feet had run too fast for the rest of him to keep up, but he let momentum do its thing and attempted a quick recovery. He let that rabbit to sprint off in its awkward shuffle, digging his feet into the ground as he shot off in the direction he’d come. Only one more try, he told himself as he found a single straggler that popped out of the rabbit hole, seemingly oblivious to the slaughter around it. A few paces more and he leapt, barely catching a hind leg in his mouth. The other leg however was something to be reckoned with as it kicked a barrage of heavy hits to his snout. With an angry growl he took his chances and let go of the rabbit for a second, jumping ahead of it to get a better grip. He chalked it up to the heat pulsing through him as the reason that his attack landed, deeply wounding the rabbit before shaking his head roughly, growling as he did so. Like the first, the body gave out rapidly. That one put up much more of a fight, with both of them having bled a fair amount. His nose now bore many scratches, throbbing with a needle-like sting. Carrying his latest kill back to where Vestar was tearing into his meal, he gave the male his fair share of space as he dropped the rabbit quickly and nudged it silently towards his hunting companion. Fetching the rabbit from the grass, he too began to eat, his blood leaking into his mouth as it mixed with that of the meal he was savoring. |
