Red spent her night time routine coming out to the Lakeside Stream. A more secluded part of the Somnus territory. An area where Red could relax a little and could spend time listening to nature, and decompressing from the days events. Thankfully, today went smooth and there was not a lot to talk about as far as events went. Maybe they were finally experiencing peace for the first time in a while?
Tonight, they found a cozy spot to lay, listening to the insects and frogs that were about, singing their tunes. This would be the most relaxed Red was willing to allow herself and only few ever got to see this. Usually they spent their time being observant, eyes focused, and working themselves relentlessly.
Sometimes, Red wondered if the constant working was her way of running from her own feelings. After years, the worry and fear of her lost friends and family still whispered in the back of her mind. But she couldn't bring herself to go searching for them. She couldn't handle the realization that they couldn't be found and what that could mean. Or the fear that finding them, happy and healthy meant they were able to achieve that without her.
Shaking her head slowly, she tried to change her thoughts. Focusing on the now. Sighing, Red went back to observing the area around her. This area will become dangerous during fall. The bears would eventually become more frequent as they search for food in preparation for hibernation in the winter. The scent of wolves might not be enough to deter a hungry or even grumpy bear.
Maybe there will be more scars to add to her pelt before winter's approach?

If Midna couldn't be found with the rest of the pack in the commons, she could most certainly be found at the lake. At the heart of the Somnus domain, every territory was equally accessible, and Midna could await her errands in the serene quietness that characterized it. There were no bustling demands for Midna to oblige, no overachieving siblings to listen to, just quiet. And, her parents were buried here, right where mother used to say they fell in love. If there was only one sentiment Midna would admittedly hold onto, it was that one. Red was here, but their company was gentle. Midna was actually rather fascinated by the general and their story, what they gave up to befriend the alphess in such dire circumstances, only to become apprentice to her father and replace him shortly after. If only due to their proximity to her past, Midna felt a little drawn to them, and tonight they seemed disturbed. She was no therapist, but she wasn't cruel, either. She picked herself up from the bed of rocks that covered her parents' bodies, her fur sticking to the cool surface after laying there for an amount of time she'd be wiser not to recount. "Hey," she said low and cool. "Honestly, what's keeping you up?"

Ever alert, Red heard the footsteps approaching before Midna made her presence known. Red only knew of a few wolves who frequented the lake like herself and Midna was one of those wolves. She looked like Ocean from a glance and the thought brought an overwhelming feeling of mourning for the older lupine. Glancing behind where the she-wolf had came, Red lingered on the two graves side-by-side. Since their deaths, Red's thoughts lingered more on her life before the pack. Wondering more about them and those feelings and fears had began leaking throughout her daily life. No one had asked Red what had been going on. Occasional discussions with Eureka was the most Red was willing to handle before she would set her mind to responsibilities and duties. " Hey," Midna's voice had Red focusing on the she-wolf once again, her tone signaling that she was calm, " Honestly, what's keeping you up?" The question had Red pausing for a moment, " Bears," she started saying, before her mouth closed. Clenching and unclenching her jaw, debating internally on whether or not to open up to the younger wolf. However, Red realized she was running away from her problems rather than facing them. That realization brought a vile taste to her mouth and for a moment Red's composure hardened as she reflected. Red was not one for running away from problems, but facing them head on. Why should this be any different? " Honestly," she finally spoke, her voice sounded caught in her throat for a moment before clearing it. "Th inking about my friends and family before Somnus, wondering if they're still out there roaming the lands or fearing that they might be dead, Or," pausing for a moment to collect herself. Never had Red been so vulnerable with anyone here besides the two that lay farther away and Eureka. "Or, t hat maybe they found a life happier than the one I tried to give them." Her tone was sullen and quiet, as her eyes seemed to focus somewhere else before looking away. Red didn't speak much about her time as a rogue, or how she led a group of rogues for almost a year before meeting Eureka. Or how much those times really meant to Red. She didn't know what Midna would say, a slight anxiety of being judged had Red standing to her feet and shaking her pelt out to relieve some stress and relax herself a little. Midna,

"Bears," Red said, inclining Midna to simply nod and turn away. But there was a breath in Red's mouth ready to expel. Oh, Midna held her breath in regret. It had come so naturally to her, possibly due to the circumstances, in a way it didn't with her siblings, to ask Red such a personal question. Upon realizing she'd tasked herself with the role of listener Midna had to recenter her focus away from the silence she coveted. On her face it may have been obvious that Red's words didn't come out like a grand elixir Midna has been waiting all her life to taste, but it was the first time she'd elicited such honesty from the general so she made an effort to listen intelligently to their personal selection of words. Midna admittedly had to widen her eyes to stay awake during the conversation. She wouldn't actively remember any of this over the following days, making her all the better wolf to spill one's secrets to, but she would always be able to pull this information from her record on command, making her all the worse wolf to spill one's secrets to. Indifference was her nature, but she wasn't unloving. Midna knew how she could be cold and she didn't try to remedy it with an ounce of dishonesty, ever. Instead, to show her affections she simply outputted a response given the information received. The same energy that goes in goes out. She believed answers were more valuable than sorry's, so she gave one. "Why torture yourself with the unknowing? Is that really the boundary you want for yourself?" Midna, rolling off the sincerity in her words, walked a little closer to Red, though keeping a comfortable distance. "It sounds like you're letting assumptions about others have a say in your happiness. Stop externalizing your judgements and go find the truth for yourself." Without regret, Midna sat down, her blazing orange eyes piercing into Red to pull out whatever inner honesty they had in there. She was undoubtedly excited to see if her words held power. What would Red do with Midna's completely unsolicited advice? Red

" Why torture yourself with the unknowing? Is that really the boundary you want for yourself? - It sounds like you're letting assumptions about others have a say in your happiness. Any other wolf and Red might have bared her teeth at them for questioning her so bluntly. But the sincerity in Midna's words kept her hackles smoothed and adding no tension to her shoulders. Glancing towards the younger she-wolf, the other seemed to have no fear at starring so intently at a superior. But why would she? Red sat down, mimicking the others language. Her mind wondering what she should be doing. To get any resolve over these feelings, Red would need to leave pack lands and go search for her answers. Anxiety prickled at her extremities as she thought about leaving. Not for her, or what is out there, but for who she was leaving behind here. However, would that mean she thought her pack weak? Red almost hated herself for feeling that way. Her pack was anything but weak. They were resilient and strong. Any threat that came their way, they would be in a better position to handle it now. Especially with the pups having grown into capable adults. Evergreen eyes met Midna's blazing orange with the same intensity. Red's mind was set. " I will be leaving for the rogue lands, let Eureka know that I will be back, and let her know that if I find my family they will be returning with me if they want to," her tone resolute. As Red stood, she approached Midna and touched her nose to the other she-wolf's cheek. " Thank you," Red spoke softly, a small moment of vulnerability and compassion given to the other before swiftly turning around and running towards the borders. - Exit to Volcanic Glades - Midna, Athena

Midna wasn't particularly nice company, but made no difference to Nevermore. She didn't hold back her tongue which liked to roll out every thought that formed in her brain. It took the work out of her mentorship and made it play, not that the salutary's practice was anything but the honest kind. Even for Midna, this was a quiet yet demanding commitment. Spending so much connecting with the type of serene life so often looked over by lay wolves positively tuned the soul, and it was Nevermore's professional opinion that Midna would struggle to recognize that. "So, Midna, what drew you to my work? It's been a few weeks and I still can't wrap my head around why someone other than my brother or sister would want to escort me around all day. Blue doesn't have the burden of listening to me and El doesn't have the privilege of doing anything about it. But what about you?"

The broken sheet of ice that glazed this part of the territory cast a dreary contour of the withering foliage sprouting from dry, brown patches of earth. The grave of her parents was completely obscured by the winter's indiscriminate coverage leaving Midna in a somber search for a small mound of snow somewhere along the stream. It seemed pointless scavenging a deadland for herbs but hearing Nevermore key up her name inspired a loose trudge away from the water nevertheless. "I'm not escorting anyone. You're the one dragging me around aimlessly in the cold." The seriousness in Nevermore's tone was offputting, but she responded in kind. Midna had grown up with the salutary's unique disposition and was disgruntled by being questioned about it. "If I'm going to become general someday, I need to be prepared to use what resources I have on the field. Red and I can't keep putting you in danger."And if they only knew what was waiting for them at the commons, they'd know the universe couldn't have better timing. Unbeknownst to Midna, her slow earned skill would be authentically tested, and so would her grit. "Let's go, there's nothing out here," she said curtly, her eyes still bitterly maneuvering up and down the icy coat of the stream and she retraced her steps back home. -Exit to Commons- Nevermore

Fear had never resided in El as it had now, eating away at his intestines and tauntingly plucking at his blue-flushed veins. A single breath had to hold up against gallons and gallons of ocean-dense resistance. Scared. Scared. Even the beast didn't dare bare arms against what felt like an inevitable discovery, and if the history of this family had proven anything, Blue wouldn't be far off either, dragged by the kin sense connection which dictated their very livelihood. A link to the chain was gone. Gone. Gone. Her body could have easily been mistaken for a shadow, its length stretched parallel to a towering green pine. El demanded his eyes to detect vertical movement from her stomach but it was a pointless campaign against his own intuition because you know. I know. Blue knows. It's why Eureka sent him here. To anyone else, Nevermore's existence was left behind to nature's will, but to El, the warm stain of her life force remained a distinct light in his inner earth map, and it illuminated the path to her grave. He didn't remember getting here, but suddenly his fiery red soul case was wrapped around Nevermore's dull form, all sense of the world around him forgotten, weeping into her fur. It was still warm. I didn't protect you. His heart poured into Nevermore's through his alaskan blue, overflowing glaciers of eyes. Please forgive me.

There was no sign of Nevermore in the commons. Even the dueling howls of Zelda and Blue combined weren't enough to guide the salutary home, which, for the pack's master navigator, was transporting Zelda into a state of dire concern. Zelda stuck to her task, her nose fitting into logs and bushes to find any sign that Nevermore had come around this way. But the lack of evidence at the north border of the commons made one thing clear: the salutary never made it out of the lakeside. If she didn't follow the stream south, then she must have gotten lost east of the lake where the waters split, or... She could feel El's turmoil as they scouted the forest, but nothing broke her heart as much this did. Is this real? She thought, answering her own question with the tears that welled in her eyes. As her heart raised up into her throat Zelda realized she wasn't crying for Nevermore, but for El, for his inability to release his pain through cries and screams as Zelda would if she had found either of her siblings' bodies in place of Nevermore's. So Zelda kept quiet, holding in her cries as not to shatter the silence that befell the forest. Instead, she gently walked up to him and pressed her nose into her fur, mourning with him for as long as he needed. El

He knew Zelda was with him. The gleam of her silver coat spotted his vision but he marked her presence with the same indifference he afforded to the murmuring trees. Sprouting over Zelda's cranium in a nauseating upward swirl was this pitless stretch of verdant spines, curling in quiet knowing over Nevermore's body. El rejected their beckoning curls, reconciling with his sister's death that he could still somehow save her with the fiery sanctum of his love that lay dormant in his blood. To see the defenseless sinkage of Nevermore's skin as Zelda put her muzzle to her hair made it vehemently boil; then feeling no inspiring lungs press up into his cheek struck El with a mortal irony he'd made himself a stranger to up until now. And though he had never in his life felt it as strongly as he did now, it didn't go anywhere. His rage made itself comfortable in the same dark hole his love had, like it wanted to be there with Nevermore just as much as every other part of him did.
Hooo. A ragged breath expired from his lips in the shape of a name, but no words could form. He needed Blue. But Zelda's ivory curtain, blurring out his peripheral with an effervescent glow, was a substitute he had to bear. Hooo, he drew again longingly, breaking his stream of air with a silent, defeated whimper.

TRIGGER WARNING: Somewhat graphic description of death. Link's eyes lost their focus as he witnessed with half awareness the unconscious dance of Percy's convulsing body. It was already dead, his soul ascended, leaving behind the desperate flashes of firing neurons signaling the body to get up, get up, get up. Link was fixated on the smile twitching on Percy's maw. He could reason intellectually that it wasn't really a smile, but the window mind of his suspended heart was wrapping itself up in the illusion of it all. The dance, the smile, the laughs leaving the lungs as puppish squeals. Once the heart was on its way to stopping there was no convincing it otherwise.
Link wasn't a salutary, but he knew what he was looking at, yet a cry somewhere in his unseeing eye thought it worthwhile to call his name. "Percy?" But he answered with a silent expire cued by the ever so slow flattening of his belly onto his ribs so tightly vacuumed he could see the shape of his spine impressing on the dirt. For the first time in his life, a selfish thought crossed Link's mind. Do I have it too? Not Zelda, not Midna, not anyone else––his first thought as he watched death do its dance before his eyes was none other than himself. He didn't know it then, but that was his first lesson. Nobody is immune to anything; not sickness, and not selfishness.
He couldn't rationalize how his feet kept moving on like nothing had happened. He knew the body had ways of captaining itself on adrenaline when the mind jumped ship, but he was awake. Why am I thinking! How can I think right now? "La, la, la," he sung aloud, reminding himself he was still on the material plane. "Okay. It's okay. I just need to finish training. I need to get everyone over here," he said in an unnaturally high voice. "It's better to talk out loud." As his feet marched his eyes continued to sink into every wide, painted image that made its way through his earthly mirror. He was a witness to himself and the effortless snowflakes already piling up on Percy's body. "Nope." Link kept walking to the lake. Every time he came to this lake he thought of his parents being buried there, except this time. He was so far from death not a single memory of it was permitted into his thoughts, which meant the memory of himself was lost, too. No origins, no purpose, just a body doing its thing for some external reason. "Oh yeah," a hesitant sigh resounded over the shockingly slow cycle of breaths keeping him warm in the snow. He was reacting, of course, to the familiar sight of his sister. "Hey Zelda." His identity came flooding back as her image became more and more real to his mind, yet it was like looking in a mirror, because she stood over El's body like it was Percy's. She was calm, too, and he was comforted by that, but as he drew closer to her he could feel the emotions seeping from her soul case in an existentially radiant wave of frequency that no words could describe. Finally, the shockwave of his sister's lifeforce struck him, and he burst uncontrollably into tears before running into her chest. He waled and wetted her fur with his cries for what felt like an eternity. Eventually he soul vomited enough of his emotional crisis to be able to draw his sticky, wet face away from her. "Okay, listen," he began almost inaudibly as his shaking breath, dry swallows and mortal whimpers broke up almost every note in his voice. "We need to help everyone to the lake. The pups are coming, so let's guide them south away from Percy and El." He said to Zelda with a plea in his tone. He trudged past her with just enough determination, or maybe fear, not to look back. He would end up at the southern entrance to the lakeside stream, ready to guide the rest of the Somnus wolves out of the commons and to the lake, committing everything he had left in him to this single task. Zelda
