Her pups used to nestle up to her in the den on cold nights like these. Cassiel was always restless, anxiously searching for a spot under her fur when she would make even the slightest movement. Now she could hear his nervous whimpers as he paced around the territory every night. He hardly slept. It was difficult to get him to eat a meal he hadn't caught himself. Tonight, Uriel and Azrael were cozied up together beneath a tree and Eureka wished they could share their peace with poor Cassiel. Time had replenished the soil and undergrowth enough times to mask the old smell of new motherhood but she could still feel it like it was yesterday. Sometimes she wished she could spend all day in that warm burrow, remembering the moments her angels came into the world, especially in times like these when a comforting touch was like a spring in the desert. But she pulled herself out from her den, legs drawing themselves towards Cassiel. When he was in this state it was either Uriel or Eureka who came to soothe him, but she wasn't sure if that was really Uriel's intention. "Cassiel. Whatever is on your mind, I want you to listen to me," she whispered, bringing her flank to his and wrapping her chin over his neck. "I had a tough day, too. Let's lay here tonight and talk." She nuzzled into him and pressed her weight down, beckoning for him to come down with her. Looking up she could see a few stars through the canopy, but they were mostly obscured by the fog. Still, being out here was a welcome change of scenery. Cassiel

If the pack left it to Cassiel to patrol the area, they'd never get any sleep. Percy liked to do his rounds at the southern end of the commons where the hills rolled down, creating a glistening peak with views of homeââthe one out there. The etched paths Percy and Merida would specialize with childish ambitions, hopping from dream to dream as they strayed from one great mountain to another. It was a nightmare for a comfortable wolf like the ones who grew up here, letting curiosity dictate fate instead of status quo, but for them it was worth dying for. If only Azaelia had been with them to experience that.
He didn't resent Somnus. He liked it here quite a lot, and given his ability to leave and return to the territory as much as he pleased, it was his choice to stay part of the family. Being here, losing Azaelia and raising her pups; it fully replenished his sense of the finite nature of livingââtruly living. See, when given the world, it's impossible not to constantly look for something better, something new, something interesting. It's not enough to drive love. After his world crumbled, love is something he began learning to see, not chase.
All through his thoughts he found himself humming a tune from his past. Its slow and monotonous melody rung of a war lullaby. Oh, mother. So dull.

Beta. Merida always hated titles but this one she took for her sister. She thought sometimes, It's just another hat. I can do it. And other times it was more like My sister is gone. I can't go on. But in either case there was always someone there to cheer her up. That's what she liked about Somnus. Even Eureka's weirdââwell, uniqueââlittermonsters had a way of keeping things interesting around here. "Hey Percy," she chirped. "Why don't you go patrol the borders, see if there are any ladies around just dying to hear your world-class singing."
Of course she was joking, but she withheld the unkind truth she wanted to spit at him, which was "We get enough of that around here with Cassiel."

Cassiel was perpetually living outside the veil of longitudinal reality. The rules of existence most wolves begin learning from inside the womb didn't catch for Cass, so his mind was free to stretch in many directions at once. It was beautiful, insane, intuitive and horrifying. Rarely did he feel lonely, though. He was usually among pleasant company with his shadow friends, but tonight they were particularly cruel to him. It wasn't easy for him to like somebody, nor for somebody to like him. He was so keen to the functions of the everyday thinker and it made him hate such superficial things like politeness, sugar coating, those white lies wolves like to tell because their truths are dull. Cassiel found that everybody seems quite the same when they put on those airs, and it was so boringly easy to get to knoe somebody's fake persona. Ocean didn't do any of those things. He always expressed himself as he truly was, which in turn made him difficult to understand. A puzzle to Cassiel, something he enjoyed very much. Ocean's presence quieted the shadow friends. They wanted to know him, too. So, he paced all night as they chanted his name. They tried and tried to call him down from death's plane so they could sit and listen to his stories some more, but they just kept populating inside of these nonsensical phrases Cassiel couldn't decode. It was pure agony. So he whimpered in pain and hummed to soothe himself. The others didn't like that very much. His mother quieted him. She liked her voice a lot. Her warm tones sounded just as they did in the old den when he would put his ear to her to her chest as a pup, listening to her gentle sleep sounds vibrate throughout her body. Tonight was the first time he heard that sound again since those days. He buried his nuzzle into her fur, mumbling into her heartbeat. "Thank you." Cassiel loved his mother, and she was excluded from his resistance to masked individuals, but only because he knew her past. Her mask was protective, a survival tool, and he imaged his mother would feel like she was dying if she didn't have it. That's something Cassiel understood. Usually, when he looked through a mask he saw manipulation and greed. When he looked through hers he saw pain. "Do you have a story for me?"

Lorelei loped back into the common grounds, a plump rabbit clutched firmly between her jaws. Her species, after all, was best suited to hunting small prey as a single or a pair. Though sheâd long since adapted to the pack-style hunts that Somnus preferred to take down large game, the very nature of a Tibetan wolf was that of independence, and she adored the freedom she possessed to go out on her own. That very afternoon had been spent traversing the open land just outside of Somnusâ domain, catching up with her rogue connections before returning to what would always be her home. The catch was one of opportunity. Her hunger had been sated in the early morning, and so she cast a glance around (eenie, meenie, miney, mo) with the lucky random recipient of the snack being their very own beta, Merida. Dropping the rabbit at her paws, she shot the older female an easy grin, tone light as she said, âCareful now, unless you want dear old Percy wooing some poor rogue into our ranks.â The rust-hued lupine nudged the rabbit closer to Merida with a paw in clear offering before pacing a few feet away and folding onto her side, posture loose and relaxed as she soaked up the meager warmth remaining from the fall-time setting sun. The day had been a productive one, which was just the way that Lorelei liked it. The loss of Azaelia and Ocean had left two glaring holes in the packâs ranks, and in Loreleiâs case, her heart. She hadnât been as close to them as many of her other peers, but they had both been beloved mentors during her time in the pack, and she felt that she had been robbed of her chance to grieve due to her absence during their deaths. Keeping busy meant she had less time to focus on their loss, and today her rumor mill had proved particularly fruitful. âEureka,â Her voice was a fond sing-song, orange gaze warm as she looked over to the Alphess. âIâve heard a rumor that may be of interest, once you have a moment.â She was unwilling to disrupt the moment between mother and son unless there was an emergency, which this was not. [nospaces][googlefont="Gotu:700,400"][googlefont="Rubik Distressed:700,400"] | [attr="class","main"]It'd been years since he'd stepped foot in the Somnus Commin Grounds and as they trekked from the borders to the central sleeping area of the pack, Draco felt the nostalgia wash over him of walking through the territory he'd known so well for years. It wasn't the return home he wanted however, carrying his brother in his jaws as he headed for Eureka. She had no healing capabilities but he was sure she'd be haply to see both of them - even if one of them was at death's door ready to meet their parents. Olive eyes trailed towards Aelin who was in step next to him. She had some medicinal training, he'd seen how she cared for their pups whenever they got scrapes and bruises. But what Luke had substained for injuries was far more than her knowledge could possibly do. He had every ounce of faith in his mate but there were just some things that one could not do. [Break][break] He wondered what had happened to cause the wounds on his brother. He'd just arrived to the borders but he had scented a bear. Its scent was fresh but it did not cling to Luke's pelt or wounds. The wounds smelled old, as if they were infected. Whatever had caused this had no doubt been long before Luke arrived to the borders. And the fact Wren nor either of Luke's sons were with him brought further concern to wrinkle Draco's forehead as he finally made it into the common grounds. Nothing seemed to have changed drastically besides the scents of new wolves Draco was sure he had yet to meet. Azaelia, Ocean and Violet's scents were non existent, something that he had feared. His mentors and role models had all likely passed in his absence. [Break][break] Setting Luke down gently next to his old den that looked like it needed some renovations, Draco looked for his sister, eyes sweeping the commons before coming to land on her. She had aged much like both he and Luke had in their time apart. Giving a short chuff, he'd grab her attention and nod his head towards Luke, not really speaking as he waited for the Alphess to take action.

The walk to the commons was hazy. Luke had not been in Somnus territory for years. It had been since he had last visited which was many seasons before when things were much better for the packs. The beautiful vegetation and greenery reminded him of his own home and his heart ached as he thought about Noctis. What had become of the land? Surely by this time it had healed from the floods and had regained its natural beauty. He wondered if others had moved into the territory, claiming it as their own. Would Somnus know? They had such a close knit alliance when Luke was the Alpha due to his own heritage from Somnus, but would that remain should he not be there? He knew that his sister was kind, but what if the ones who moved into Noctis territory were not? As the thoughts whirled through his mind, Draco set him down next to a den that held the faintest smell of the large mass of fur that was now staring at their sister. Luke stared at Eureka for a solid moment as his vision went in and out of focus. Staring at her, he wondered how she had grown so much. Same with Draco as he was finally able to take in his brother. The three of them had changed so much since they were younger, and he wondered where the time had gone. âEureka,â His voice was gravelly, but the hope he clung to blossomed from a sprout to a stalk as he stared towards his family. He already knew that his father and mother would not be here, but he had them. And that was more than enough. Eureka Draco

"That's how we formed an allegiance with Noctis." Eureka finished telling Cassiel about the coywolf war. "Of course, it hasn't been the same since my brother-" Then, blinking twice sealed as a perfect photograph in her soul the dual visage of her long lost brothers. Eureka propelled her body forward with a strength she didn't know she possessed, and a passion she'd waited years to feel pour into her spirit again. The love she felt for her brothers evicted all physical senses in a delirium that masked the state of Luke's visage. The pain Luke held in his broken voice was lost in the story of hope being told in his eyes as Draco set him before the den. Eureka couldn't even string a word together to aptly sing the joy song musing in her heart. "You've stolen my breath. I can't believe it's you," Eureka cried as the weight of her body melted into Draco's fur. It would have stolen Luke's breath indefinitely had she fed her desire to do the same to him. All she could do was eat him up with her hopeful eyes, which soon abandoned him for Nevermore. Link was injured, but not too badly. "Nevermore, over here!" Eureka called as she rushed towards her. "Merida, help Link."Eureka guided Nevermore to her brother. "You'll be okay, Luke. We're all going to be okay." She looked up at Draco, a shaky smile forming underneath her welling eyes, suspended between grief and joy. There was no pain in his eyes like Luke's. With Aelin by his side, together their love yellow and complete, Draco didn't come here with weight on his shoulders. His was a colorful canvas, a father whose spirit was shining with serenity and pride "Draco, I've had to keep my own counsel since you've been away. Tell me you've come to stay by my side again," Eureka implored, struggling to comprehend his form in the flesh and not merely as a memory. Luke, Draco, Merida, Link, Nevermore

Aura awkwardly made her way to the Somnus Common Grounds. A pack's common grounds was the last place she would have ever envisioned herself. Then again, before today, she wouldn't have thought she would have done any of the things she had done. All Aura had been doing was making sure the mother was okay. And all of a sudden she found herself in the middle of a bear fight. Why could she not have just left things alone? Aura set Tomlin down with an irritated huff. As soon as Rory caught up and got her damn pup, she would make sure to get far away from this place. Because if being here led her to do such reckless things, then Aura wanted nothing to do with it. She never wanted to be risking her life for any wolf, let alone a wolf she had just met. She wanted nothing to do with any of this. God, she needed to leave so she could take a nap after the headache this day had been. â

Blue never stayed in one den for overly long. Her usual den was shallow and cozy, dug just deep enough to shield her from the worst of the elements when necessary. She preferred it that way; she liked to see the stars whenever possible. Then, there was the far larger den that she had used when Azaelia and Eurekaâs litters had been freshly weaned, big enough to accommodate all six of the children whenever they had been left in the guardianâs care. And then there were the times that she used neither, instead opting to nose her way into whichever siblingâs den struck her fancy that night. Her pack would be well used to her tendency to emerge from a different place every morning. It is this first, shallow den that Blue ushers Rory into, knowing that the new mother would likely be exhausted and wanting to get off her paws. Nipping the other she-wolfâs ear ever-so lightly to encourage her to stay, she would tuck Merlin at the motherâs belly before traipsing over to Tomlin, picking him up and placing him beside his brother. This way the chill breeze sweeping through the commons would be blocked, but Rory would still be able to see the wolves around herâ and vice versa. Her petite body shook under the force of her tailâs wagging, an innocent joy sparked as she witnessed the reunion between siblings. Brothers come home, new life; the love felt between all would surely be enough to warm them in the winter to come. She felt certain that Eureka would grant them all a place here, because surely the alphess she knew would not leave freshly whelped pups to the uncertain wilderness beyond. Blue lowered her frame to the ground, chin resting softly atop her paws as she gazed at the pups, enraptured. Perhaps she would scrounge around the commonâs outskirts for a mouse or two to offer Rory, but only once the wonder wore off somewhat. Rory Tomlin Merlin

Heading to the commons wasn't an easy task, though it wasn't too hard. She supposed it was just more tiring on her since she had just given birth and had to deal with a bear. 'Okay, yeah. We had to deal with a lot back there.' Rory had fluctuated her position throughout the journey not wanting to be in front of her pups where they were out of eyesight, though also not wanting to fall behind her pups in case there was anything dangerous ahead of them, like another bear. She shuddered at the thought of having another encounter with one after hearing how the last fight went down. Emerging into the commons with Aura and Blue, she was herded to a shallow orifice that resided closest to the entry to the commons. Laying down inside the coolness helped her body temperature lower from its rather high state, and a few moments after she got settled her pups were being brought to her. It didn't take either of them long to snuggle up close to her and start kneading her belly. The rythmatic pushing and retracting of their tiny paws was soothing to her. It seemed as though Blue thought the pups were to be awestruck about as well. The she-wolf inclined her head slightly encouraging the alabaster female to come closer if she so desired. Rory had a feeling that Blue wouldn't do anything to harm her boys, a similar feeling she had with Aura. Though with Aura she felt that the wolf didn't really want to be here, with all of these unfamiliar wolves and in this particular situation at all. She really hoped the Aura would stay, she actually seemed to be a decent wolf, one that Rory would gladly get to know better if she allowed it. Rory's assumption that Aura did not want to be here was an accurate one, as Aura wanted to be anywhere but. So when Tomlin was taken off of her paws, and Rory was settled with her pups, the she-wolf followed for the last time. After all that had occurred, Aura didn't plan to leave Rory wondering where she had gone. But she didn't quite fancy staying, either. She didn't want to be responsible for anyone but herself. Although Aura did decide to sit for a moment, allowing herself to rest beside Blue as she took in the image of the pups. Both spitting images of Rory. For a moment, Aura let herself smile. She never really considered herself a pup wolf, never wanting to be held down by the needy things, but even she had to admit they were kind of cute. Still wanted nothing to do with them, but they were cute. Not that Aura would say it out loud. She was still mad at the little buggers for putting her through all of this. With a dip of her head, Aura got to her paws, stretching as she stood. "Well, Rory, it was nice to meet you, and I hope you and your pups get on well, here. If you don't need anything else from me, then I'm heading out." Please don't need anything. 226 words, Eureka , Percy , Merida , Cassiel , Lorelei , Draco , Luke ,, Blue , Rory , â

A claw struck Link's flank but he seemed unfazed by the incident, so Nevermore took her nose to the wound and gently brushed the fur around it. Link's injury was deceptively clean. The gash wasn't deep but it had a long surface of exposure. If not treated, a simple laceration could become a lethal infection. With Midna's assistance, Nevermore helped Link to the common grounds and aided him outside of a den. Nevermore had a healing den, but it wasn't meant for bodies. The musky womb of a dugout was a breeding zone for bacteria in a festering wound like Link's. Rather, she used it to store the collection of herbs she'd found around the territories. A small stock of lavender, chamomile, yarrow, burdock, rapeseed and black walnut was what was available in her freshest store, but her most recent venture into the rogue lands was interrupted by her chance discovery and she would need to leave again for ingredients soon. Link was lucky Nevermore had enough to help him today, but Luke's wounds were far more advanced and would need continuous treatment over the following weeks. El would soon be busy escorting his sister to and from the surrounding territories. For now, she made do with what she had. Nevermore pulled out each ingredient she would need and described their properties to Merida and Midna, assuming they were nearby. Nevermore gave Merida instructions for Link before summoning herself to Luke. "Give him some black walnuts to eat, then chew up this yarrow and apply it directly to the wound. He'll need to let it sit for an hour before moving around." Nevermore couldn't see if Midna was still nearby, so she spoke rather loudly. "Midna, follow me with some rapeseed and walnuts." She took the same yarrow into her maw, preparing a poultice as she walked. She didn't want to interrupt Eureka's reunion, but as she began gently feeling for his injuries applying her poultice she couldn't help but whisper to him, "What the hell happened to you?"

[nospaces][googlefont="Gotu:700,400"][googlefont="Rubik Distressed:700,400"] | [attr="class","main"]Lukeâs gravelly call for their sister made his ears twitch ever so slightly. He wanted to find out who had done this to his brother. He was going to make them pay. No matter how long he had to search for them. He would do the same for his sister, and any of his kin or pack members. Draco cared deeply for those he loved, and if anyone were to hurt them, they would find themselves with a massive wolf threatening their life. Eureka was fast moving, and was pressed into him within seconds. Years ago, he would have moved away from her touch. Still dwelling in his moral dilemma of what had happened when they were young. But they had aged, and with the passage of time came the fondness of having his sister close. He returned her embrace by wrapping his head over hers, giving a small greeting bark to his sister. âItâs good to be home,â He breathed before she was quickly moving, taking action to help Luke. [break][break] He watched his sister, keeping an eye on what she was doing. Nevermore was the healer of the clan now, Draco wondered if Murdoch must have passed due to old age. But she was a great salutary, that much he knew before heâd left. As Eureka comforted Luke, he felt a sadness weigh in his heart. His brother would never walk right again, even Draco could see that. And the eye that was irreplaceable would need some getting used to. But Luke would be alive, and thatâs what mattered. He wasnât sure if his leg could properly be healed or if there was a chance that maybe Draco was being dramatic about Luke never walking again, but his thoughts were once more dragged away by the sound of Eurekaâs voice. [break][break] He gave a chuckle before nudging her. âThis time, it will be for good.â

She kept close to Draco's side on the way back to the Commons, even as he hauled the sickeningly limp figure of his own brother with him. Worry pulled at her brows and brought the unusual sight of a frown to her maw. It had been ages since they'd seen Luke, and he had been doing so well when they had. He had a mate, pups, and a whole pack behind him. So what had changed? Was Noctis still as they knew it? Or had it been completely dissolved or run over? This whole situation was anxiety inducing, though she tried not to assume the worse. Aelin could just be grateful that he was still alive and now in the care of the Salutary. Despite the distress that came with finding Luke in his condition, entering the Commons gave Aelin the feeling of a weight being taken off her shoulders. She took a deep breath and savoured the crisp scent of the pine woods that surrounded them, as well as the petrichor that lingered within the rain spoiled grasses. They were home. Aelin lingered still near Draco as he reunited with Eureka. She would be there to offer a smile and a friendly nod of the head if the Alphess was to look her way, but she wouldn't intrude any further than that. She had stolen Draco away for long enough, this was time for him to be with the rest of his family. Instead, she found her attention drifting more-so towards Nevermore, listening keenly to what the Salutary had to say on Luke's matter, and what her method would be to aid him. Aelin had always been interested in this type of work, and took the chance to listen in and learn wherever she could, which included now, as she also happened to be worried about the recovery of her mate's brother.
